Background of the study
Socio-economic status (SES) is a well-established determinant of health, influencing lifestyle, access to care, and overall well-being. In Oshimili South Local Government Area, disparities in income, education, and employment have been linked to differences in the prevalence of hypertension. Individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds often experience higher stress levels, poor dietary practices, and limited access to quality healthcare, all of which contribute to elevated blood pressure (Adebisi, 2023). Recent studies indicate that SES disparities significantly affect the prevalence of chronic conditions, including hypertension, by shaping health behaviors and access to preventive services (Ogun, 2024). Furthermore, the interplay between socio-economic factors and health outcomes necessitates targeted interventions to reduce these disparities and improve community health (Umeh, 2025). This study aims to investigate the influence of socio-economic status on hypertension prevalence in the region, providing insights that could inform tailored public health strategies.
Statement of the problem
The prevalence of hypertension in Oshimili South is disproportionately high among individuals with lower socio-economic status due to limited access to healthcare, poor nutrition, and increased stress levels. These factors contribute to significant health disparities, undermining overall community well-being. The need to understand the socio-economic determinants of hypertension is critical for developing interventions that address these inequalities (Adebisi, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To examine the relationship between socio-economic status and hypertension prevalence.
To identify key socio-economic determinants influencing hypertension.
To propose interventions aimed at reducing hypertension disparities.
Research questions:
How does socio-economic status affect hypertension prevalence in Oshimili South?
What socio-economic factors contribute most significantly to hypertension?
What interventions can reduce the impact of these factors on hypertension rates?
Research Hypotheses:
Lower socio-economic status is associated with higher hypertension prevalence.
Socio-economic disparities significantly influence health outcomes.
Targeted interventions can reduce hypertension incidence among disadvantaged groups.
Significance of the study
This study offers crucial insights into how socio-economic factors contribute to the prevalence of hypertension. The findings will assist policymakers in designing targeted public health interventions to address disparities and improve health outcomes, ultimately contributing to a reduction in chronic disease prevalence in Oshimili South.
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the investigation of the influence of socio-economic status on hypertension prevalence in Oshimili South Local Government Area, Delta State.
